Dunno, sort of tangential to the point but I could have phrased it better originally.  I suspect it depends on how you're defining molestation.  I personally have a problem with a 17 year old male fucking a post-pubertal 13 year old girl (b/c he's at a very different level of psychological development than she is), but it's not illegal. State-dependent. In Georgia (which raised the age of consent from 14 to 16 in 1996), 17 and 13 is still a felony, 17 and 14 would be a misdemeanor. In biological terms, up until the last 0.1% of our existence when we decided it was morally 'bad', a post-pubescent female was fair game. Still is in hunter-gatherer cultures, always has been in the animal kingdom (they don't have brains big enough to get their panties twisted over 'morals').   She's fertile and her biology is telling her to reproduce.  A post-pubescent male's biology is saying the same thing AND he is additionally wired to be attracted to the signals of youth that a post-pubescent female is giving off. Because of the realities of modern society, this may cause problems if: a. the female hits puberty before certain psychological development has occurred, which was part of my original point b. other aspects of her environment (i.e. unstable home scenario b/c parents are fuckups or mom was a fuckup and brought an abusive stepdad into the house becuase her first fuckup husband is already gone) put her in dangerous situations The exact ages are marginally arbitrary to what I'm trying to get at. The powers that be have decreed that sex between two people when there are certain age differences (noting that age doesn't automatically equal psychological development even if, on average, they tend to correlate) is morally wrong, hence illegal.  It's an arbitrary decision mind you, even if it has usefulness to society (as an attempt to prevent sexual predation of children).
