I mean, you apparently don't read the books yourself. I can see you're trying to be a flamer here, but not doing a very good gob of it when handed straight material to work with so I'll make it easy for you :   Classics are generally held by society as a collective to be thought of and categorized as such.   Little Women Black Beauty   Island of the Blue Dolphins etc. are what I'm referring to.   Perhaps your idea of a classic is an old Penthouse Forum you got your fantasy letter printed in?

<< I am mathematically illiterate. I blame the new math in 1962 << which they sprung on me even though I had no ability at basic arithmetic. You and me both, Ruth.  I changed schools between the 6th and 7th grades, and went from the 'old math' to the 'new match' and from being good at math to not getting it at all. Its weird isn't it? thank the technical gods and goddesses for calculators. Only if they get banned for anyone not in high school.  I can think of no reason that a primary school student, unless they are at some hyper- advanced level of mathematics, would need a calculator.  For goodness sake, teach them tables and basic arithmetic first!  The amount of people who a) can't add up three numbers without a calculator; and b) can't string three coherent sentences together on a piece of paper is truly astounding.  And I'm in Australia, which I hope isn't as bad as other places... PS Yes, I did just start a sentence with and .  Sue me Christian.

<< Surely you do realize that a work of art being a classic does not automatically mean that it does not contain material deemed inappropriate by some? (Catcher in the Rye, anyone?) I very much doubt he realizes any such thing. And don't call him Shirley.

Since I was born in '65, I guess I just missed the old math.  Truth be told, I never understood what old math was.  Before 1962, did 2 + 2 = 5?
