brick patios Mold on Brick Patios
I have a brick patio on the North side of my house. In the winter, much of it is in permanent shade, and the shade plus the wetness from rain and sprinklers causes green mold (fungus?) to grow in abundance on the bricks. Are there any products that will get rid of the mold and/or prevent it from grwoing? I would like to find a product that is not particularly lethal to plants, animals, or humans. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks. Lou D'Amario

It's pretty easy to remove with a high pressure water sprayer, tho

Lou D'Amario I've had some luck with Thompsons Water Seal, it keeps the bricks dry enough that the moss only grows where the water puddles.  But it wears off, & needs to be reapplied every year.  In the fall, of course, when the bricks are dry. -m

I suppose Louis is like one of my (unknowledgeable) former neighbors who got rid of a pile of dirty, old bricks and purchased clean new ones. Guess who was right there to cart the old bricks away?   He even thanked (!!) me for saving him a trip to the dump. I said You're quite welcome just to keep from laughing out loud.

Nick - NJ - Zone 7a Scrounging is a great way to get used bricks. I have used two different sources. 1) Actually came to terms to buy pavers from a demolition. 5 cents each. 2) Got bricks from a gravel pit. Accidently stumbled on this. Cost me $5 for 350 cream toned exterior bricks, about 70 Purington pavers and about a dozen more unusual ones. Bricks may turn up in wierd places, they are not easy to get rid of. THis gravel pit actually made $10 on the bricks. They charged the dumper $5, and I paid $5. Everbody was happy. Friends have had luck advertising on radio and newspaper. A good find of used bricks can make for a beautiful inexpensive patio, but it will take work. Buck Z5
